Why Trump called meeting with Democrats a Total Waste of Time?
The U.S Government Shutdown is now on its 19th day. The Democratic leaders and U.S Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed that the U.S President slammed the table and just walked out. He informed reporters after the meeting at the White House that the president said if he opened up the government, Democrats will no longer “Do what I want” (more than $5 billion in border wall funding). Schumer said, “That’s cruel, that’s callous and that’s using millions of innocent people as sort of pawns, and it was wrong”. He claimed that just after few minutes, Trump slammed that table and when Pelosi said that she didn’t agree with a wall, he just walked out and said, “We have nothing to discuss. It was a waste of his time”.
The president later confirmed most of Schumer’s claims in a tweet. Trump also called the meeting a total waste of time. He tweeted, “I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works”!
Schumer mentioned the incident with the president as a temper tantrum due to he couldn’t get his way. Republican leaders described the meeting very differently. The House Minority Whip Steve Scalise said that Trump was very calm. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said that the behavior of Democrats was embarrassing.
McCarthy said that Trump entered the room and he even brought a little bit of candy for everybody. Trump asked where both sides stood on negotiations to fund the government and end the shutdown. Negotiations collapsed when Democrats objected to Trump’s request for border wall funding if Trump quickly reopened the government. Democrats have long said that they would provide funding for other measures of border security, but not the wall. Trump said, “If you don’t understand financial insecurity, then you would have a policy that takes pride in saying, I’m going to keep the government shut down for months or years unless you totally agree to my position”.
