Reddit App revealed new Discover Tab & Navigation to find More Communities
Reddit seems to have launched the first key change to its mobile app after 2 years and to add a new Discover Tab option. It would offer a modified navigation system and personalized recommendations. The new Tab includes efficient Community and Profile menus. Users can now rapidly access profile settings and recognize their subscriptions.
The company recognized from users that they needed an efficient way to explore their interests. So, Reddit decided to present a more effective way and now introduced the Discover Tab feature. A point to be noted is that the company now has at least 100 thousand active communities.
Statement from PCC Director
Reddit’s director of PCC (Product for Content and Communities) Jason Costa issued a statement. Costa said the company is trying to solve the issue. It is now hard to find communities and subreddits that you need to develop a deep connection with them.
However, it pops up in Google Search or Reddit Search. So, the company started creating a new surface area and it will show lesser-fame communities in the search.
Android and iOS users will find the new Discover Tab at the right side of the home button in the Reddit mobile app. You will find a visually appealing vertical feed of community (subreddit) recommendations. It is based on acceptance and your engagement patterns whether you are an existing or brand-new Reddit user.
Recommendations and Suggestions from Reddit
Moreover, Reddit will accommodate things to finalize its recommendations, such as which subscriptions you already have and where you spend time. The app will recommend other sports communities if you subscribe to many basketball subreddits.
Reddit will offer suggestions of reputable communities for a new user until it gets a handsome signal showing your actual interests. However, Reddit will not recommend any type of knowledge about users’ demographics such as gender, age, or location.
The Discover Tab will offer GIFs, photos, and videos in small boxes with the name of representing the community. This option uses rich multimedia designed to provide more sound and motion. The Discover Tab feature will enable users to refine their suggestions instead of going long-pressing on a tile to select options.
The entire new section contains top-level categories such as History, Technology, Sports, Hobbies, Animals, and others. It is noteworthy that the Discover Tab will not showcase all communities.
Reddit PCC director said the company will not recommend any NSFW community. The company will also avoid suggesting any quarantined or banned community in any way. This approach will efficiently stop more controversial communities of Reddit to gain more friction.
Discover Tab to Add More Communities
The company is hopeful that the new Discover Tab will support users to find more communities for a subscription. It would enable them to launch the Reddit app more frequently and engage people with more content.
The new feature could provide significant support to empower the bottom line of Reddit. The company discovered that 1 in 5 people joined at least one new community using Discover Tab.
It is important that the new feature is still unavailable on the web. Reddit seems to focus on the 70% of its user base that is engaging them with its service using the mobile app.
Android, iOS, and Desktop Users of Reddit
There are around 55% iOS and 45% Android mobile web users compared to the 30% currently using Reddit on the desktop. The company should consider its navigation because the new tab has replaced the subscription tab.
However, the subscription tab was previously found at the bottom navigation bar. The subscription option is now added to the left in the new Community menu for sorting and customizing.
The new Community Drawer features 4 sections, including Moderating entry points, Your Communities, Following, and the r/all entry point. The new Profile Drawer will enable you to access and customize your new profile.
