A mother proudly uploaded a photograph on her Facebook page on 28th April 2017 with a claim that her newborn baby clutching an IUD “Mirena” brand intrauterine birth control device in his small hands. The published photograph includes a caption “Mirena Fail”. This image virally shared on social media ten thousand times within just few days after its publishing. It was expectedly assumed by some viewers regarding the image that baby was born holding the IUD in his little hand. Point to be noted that the mother of the baby, Lucy Hellein never said that her baby was born holding the IUD in his small hand. She informed First Coast News that doctors were well aware about an IUD had remained in her uterus in her entire pregnancy, but they were unable to find it.
She also confirmed that it was later discovered in her c-section and removed. An OBGYN and assistant clinical professor for the University of California in Los Angeles, Dr. Leena Nathan said that IUDs are being considered much effective method for birth control. She added that some doctors irregularly discovered failed ones in the uterus after giving birth, but these cases are rare. She added that it might be impossible for a newborn baby for holding such a device in his hand during birth delivery. It is due to there will be no way for an IUD to go inside the amniotic sac. There is a fluid-filled membrane that conceals a fetus during its growth inside the womb. The IUD (Mirena) maker also said that this device had shown its effectiveness 99% in avoiding pregnancy.
