Why FBI Paid 900 Thousand U.S Dollars to unlock iPhone?
Apple was involved in a battle with the FBI over privacy in the early 2016, particularly either it could crack an iPhone 5C following the terrorist attack in San Bernardino. Apple rejected to create a specific backdoor portion of software in order to mislead the built in security protections in iOS. It was due to privacy concerns of other millions of people using iPads and iPhones. So, FBI purchased software to crack the iPhone, but agency didn’t mention about its purchasing cost. Now, the U.S Senator Dianne Feinstein has announced that the software was purchased at 900 thousand U.S dollars to break into the phone of shooter. This amount was less than the previously estimated amount 1.3 million U.S dollars.
The director of FBI, James Comey earlier said that the cost of software was more than he would collect in the 7 years and 4 months until his retirement. The U.S Senator Feinstein pointed to the 900 thousand U.S dollars amount during an oversight hearing at a Senate Judiciary Committee. The Associated Press indicated that Feinstein said, “I was so struck when incident at San Bernardino took place and you made a proposal to allow the device to be opened, and then 900 thousand U.S dollars had spent by FBI to hack it open”. The FBI was continuously rejecting to disclose the amount of software prior to this statement about its cost to break the iPhone of shooter at San Bernardino.
