Why 300 million U.S dollars in aid to Pakistan canceled?
Pentagon said that 300 million U.S dollars worth of aid to Pakistan has canceled due to observed failure in the fight back against militants. This decision came after months when the U.S President Trump suggested that the United States repeatedly supported Pakistan, just to be rewarded with nothing but lies. The U.S Congress deprived 500 million U.S dollars earlier this year in coalition support funds from Islamabad. It means that the United States has now eliminated a total of 800 million U.S dollars. The U.S military also said that it will now ask the U.S Congress for any approval to re-allocate those funds for other priorities. The Trump administration has claimed that Pakistan is granting safe haven to militants who are waging a 17-year-old war in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has denied the allegation.
The Pentagon spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Kone Faulkner said that the decision took place due to a lack of Pakistani decisive actions in support of the South Asia Strategy as the remaining 300 million U.S dollars was reprogrammed. The money will be spent on other urgent priorities if approved by the U.S Congress. Experts believe that this decision might increase pressure on Islamabad’s security apparatus as Pakistan’s economy continues to struggle. The leadership in Pakistan is reportedly considering applying for a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), an international body in which the U.S has the most number of votes. They are squeezing due to they know that they’re vulnerable and it is probably a signal to expect that Pakistan will come to the IMF for a loan. New Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan earlier said that he would shoot down U.S drones if they enter Pakistani airspace.
